Two British veterans rowing more than 3,200 miles across the Atlantic have thanked supporters as they near the final stage of their challenge.
Sean Phelps, from Portland, and Jonny Towers, from Lancashire, are currently taking part in the Atlantic Dash, rowing from Lanzarote to Antigua. The pair, both former Royal Marine Commandos, have been documenting their journey and recently shared a message of appreciation to those backing them.
In a video posted to followers, Sean said he wanted to give “a big shout out” to everyone who had supported them from the beginning, including individuals, organisations and pubs. He said the backing had made a real impact and helped drive them forward.
In a joint statement, the pair described the row as full of adversity but said the overwhelming support and belief in their mission had stood out most. They added: “We’re going to do this.”
Sean and Jonny expect to reach Antigua in under a week, with their arrival anticipated on Tuesday, March 24.
Despite the physical and mental demands of the journey, they have maintained strong spirits, describing themselves as “jolly” while rowing around 50 miles a day in strict two-hour shifts.
The challenge is also a fundraising effort, with the duo supporting Samaritans and the forces charity Care After Combat. So far, they have raised £13,158.60 towards a £50,000 target.
Care After Combat works to ensure that no veteran faces their challenges alone, helping former Armed Forces personnel and their families rebuild their lives with dignity and pride, including those involved in the justice system.
