Landslip at popular Weymouth beach

A landslip has occurred at a popular Weymouth beach following ongoing warnings about unstable cliffs in west Dorset. Parts of the cliff base at Bowleaze Cove have fallen away, leaving areas of soft mud along the seafront. Residents are being urged to keep a safe distance from the affected area when walking along the beach.

The incident is reported to have taken place on Friday evening and follows months of heavy rain and adverse weather that have caused disruption across the county. Prolonged wet conditions are understood to have contributed to the instability of the cliffs.

The landslip came as a shock to people walking along the beach at the time.

One person nearby said: “It looks like there have been a couple of significant landslides at the cliffs at Bowleaze. It’s also very muddy. I would advise people to keep away from the edge and the top of the cliff.”

Beachgoers are being reminded to remain vigilant and avoid the base and top of cliffs, particularly after periods of sustained rainfall.
