A petition has been launched calling for green fields in Southill to be protected from development. Campaigners say plans are being put forward to build housing on part of the land near Radipole Lane in Weymouth. The petition argues the area is used by the community and is home to wildlife. Supporters are asking Dorset planning authority to reject the proposals. The online campaign is gathering signatures from residents.

A petition has been launched calling for Southill Fields in Weymouth to be protected from development.

Campaigners say proposals are being put forward to build 350 houses on two of the fields near Radipole Lane, which they argue would result in the loss of open green space used by residents.

Supporters of the campaign say the land is regularly used by the community for activities including dog walking, family walks, children playing, nature walks and horse riding.

The petition also highlights concerns about the potential impact on wildlife that currently lives in the area.

Animals listed in the campaign include buzzards, kestrels, deer, foxes, badgers, slow worms, lizards and dormice which campaigners say use the fields and nearby woodland habitat.

Those backing the petition are calling on Dorset planning authority to stop the proposed development and protect the fields.

Organisers say the aim of the campaign is to show support for protecting the area for local residents, wildlife and future generations.
